Privacy Policy

What Shirewell collects, why we collect it, who can see it, and the choices you have.

Last updated: October 30, 2026

1. The short version

  • We collect information needed to operate Shirewell, manage your account, and provide household task-management features.
  • We don’t sell your personal information, display third-party advertisements, or use third-party advertising or analytics trackers.
  • Information you add to a household is visible to the members of that household, subject to their permissions.
  • We may retain information about your home to personalize maintenance schedules, recommend relevant tasks, and improve your experience.
  • You can manage your information, notification preferences, and account from Account settings.
  • You can delete your account at any time. Some information may remain in shared households, temporary backups, or records retained for legitimate business or legal purposes, as explained below.

2. What we collect

We collect information you provide and certain technical information generated when you use Shirewell.

Account information

When you create an account, we collect your name, username, email address, and password. Passwords are stored using a one-way cryptographic hash rather than in readable form.

We also maintain information such as your time zone, account status, subscription plan, and notification preferences.

Household information

When you create or join a household, we may collect:

  • Household names, descriptions, and addresses you provide.
  • Household membership and roles.
  • Invitations you send, including the invitee’s name and email address.
  • Information about household responsibilities and activities.
  • Information about your home’s characteristics, equipment, and maintenance needs.

Tasks and activity

We store information you create or record, including:

  • Tasks and descriptions.
  • Due dates, reminders, and recurrence schedules.
  • Task assignments and rotations.
  • Comments and task activity.
  • Completion history and time spent on tasks.
  • Other household information you choose to enter.

Onboarding and household profile information

During initial setup, we may ask questions about your home and household, such as your heating and cooling systems, water and septic systems, outdoor spaces, appliances, and maintenance responsibilities.

We use your answers to recommend relevant tasks and maintenance schedules.

We may retain these answers as part of your household profile to personalize your experience, improve future recommendations, suggest relevant maintenance activities, and support new household-management features as Shirewell evolves.

This information is associated with your household and is not sold to advertisers or used to build third-party advertising profiles.

Communications

When you contact us, we collect the information you submit, such as your name, email address, message topic, and message content.

Visits and campaign links

When you visit our public pages, we record the page you landed on, any campaign tags in the link you followed (such as utm_campaign), the domain of the website that referred you, a random visitor identifier kept in your browser, and the IP address your visit came from. The identifier is not derived from your device and isn’t used to recognise you on other websites.

We use the IP address to tell real visitors apart from repeated or automated traffic (for example, many visits from one network or a bot), so our campaign numbers are accurate. We delete it from the visit record after 30 days.

If you create an account, we link your first campaign visit from the previous 30 days to it, so we can tell which campaigns bring households that find Shirewell useful.

We ask before keeping the visitor identifier in your browser. Until you choose, it exists only while the page is open, so a sign-up during that visit can still be credited to the link you followed. If you decline, we stop recording your visits, delete the identifier, and don’t link any campaign to an account you create. You can change your choice any time with Privacy choices at the bottom of our pages. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as declining.

Technical and security information

Our systems may process IP addresses, request information, timestamps, and technical logs to operate Shirewell, troubleshoot problems, and protect against unauthorized access or abuse.

For example, IP addresses may be used to limit repeated sign-in attempts.

We do not maintain a permanent IP-address history associated with your user profile. IP addresses are kept with visit records for 30 days (see Visits and campaign links), and some may appear in temporary server, infrastructure, or security logs.

Payment information

We do not currently process subscription payments.

If paid billing becomes available, we will update this policy to explain what billing-related information we collect and which payment providers process transactions.

3. How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • Create and maintain your account.
  • Operate households, task lists, assignments, schedules, rotations, and dashboards.
  • Generate and improve personalized task recommendations, maintenance schedules, and household-management features based on information you provide about your home.
  • Retain household characteristics so you don’t have to provide the same information repeatedly.
  • Improve Shirewell’s functionality, reliability, and user experience.
  • Send account verification and security messages.
  • Send household invitations, task assignment notifications, reminders, and daily summaries.
  • Respond to support requests and other communications.
  • Enforce applicable plan limits.
  • Maintain service reliability, investigate problems, and prevent abuse.
  • Comply with applicable legal obligations.

Email notifications

You can disable optional assignment notifications and daily summaries from Account settings under Notifications, or through unsubscribe links where provided.

Essential account and security notifications cannot be disabled while maintaining an active account.

Advertising and analytics

We do not currently use third-party advertising pixels, advertising cookies, or third-party analytics trackers.

We may measure basic website activity and registration performance using information collected directly by our own systems, including referral information and campaign parameters included in website URLs.

We do not sell your personal information or create advertising profiles from your household tasks.

If our advertising or analytics practices materially change, we will update this policy before introducing those changes.

4. Who can see your information

Other household members

People who belong to the same household can see information shared within that household, subject to their access permissions.

This may include tasks, comments, assignments, completion history, time spent on tasks, household profile information, and information displayed on the household dashboard.

Household members can see other members’ names and usernames, but do not ordinarily see their email addresses.

Household owners may see the email addresses of people they invite.

Please consider what information you share before adding other people to a household.

Shirewell administrators

Authorized Shirewell administrators may access basic account information, including names, usernames, email addresses, account plans, and household memberships, for legitimate operational purposes.

Our administrative interface does not ordinarily display the contents of household tasks.

However, authorized personnel with appropriate technical access may need to examine additional information when reasonably necessary to investigate security incidents, troubleshoot problems, respond to support requests, or comply with legal obligations.

We limit such access to legitimate operational needs.

Service providers

We use third-party services to operate Shirewell. These may include:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): Infrastructure, hosting-related services, and email delivery.
  • Our hosting and infrastructure providers: Operation and maintenance of application systems.
  • Google Maps Platform: When address suggestions are enabled, address text entered into relevant fields may be sent to Google to provide location suggestions.

These providers may process information as necessary to deliver their services, subject to their applicable terms and privacy practices.

Professional service integrations

Shirewell may eventually offer the ability to request quotes or professional assistance for household tasks.

When these features become available, we will explain what information is shared and with whom.

We will not intentionally send a household task to a professional service provider for a quote unless you choose to initiate that request.

Such requests may require sharing task descriptions, service addresses, contact information, photographs, and other information relevant to the requested service.

Legal requirements and business transfers

We may disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with applicable law, respond to valid legal process, enforce our terms, or protect the rights and safety of our users and others.

If Shirewell is involved in a merger, acquisition, sale, or transfer of business assets, relevant information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law and privacy commitments.

We will provide notice of material changes to how your information is handled when required or appropriate.

5. Cookies and local storage

Shirewell uses cookies and browser storage necessary to provide its functionality.

These may include:

  • An authentication cookie that keeps you signed in.
  • Local storage for preferences such as light or dark mode.
  • Local storage for onboarding progress and dismissed invitations.
  • If you accept, local storage for a random visitor identifier and the first campaign link you arrived through, which your browser forgets 30 days after your last visit.
  • Local storage for your answer to that question, so we don’t ask again for a year.

We do not currently use third-party advertising cookies or analytics trackers.

You can clear cookies and local storage through your browser settings, although doing so may sign you out or reset certain preferences.

6. How long we keep information and deleting your account

Account and household data

We generally retain account and household information while your account remains active or while the information is needed for an active shared household.

This includes household profile information collected during onboarding, which may be retained to support ongoing maintenance recommendations and future household-management functionality.

You can delete your account from Account settings → Security.

When you delete your account:

  • Your account and household memberships are removed.
  • Your notification preferences and scheduled account notifications are removed.
  • Households you own are transferred to the longest-standing remaining member, if one exists.
  • If you are the only member of a household, that household, its household profile, and its associated tasks are deleted.
  • Tasks, comments, completion history, and household profile information associated with continuing households may remain available to their members, without displaying your deleted account as the contributor.
  • Your campaign attribution and the visit records from your browser are deleted.
  • We send a confirmation email regarding the account deletion.

Deleting your account does not necessarily delete information that belongs to a shared household that continues to exist.

Support correspondence

Messages submitted through our contact form may be retained to maintain records of support interactions and respond to follow-up requests.

You may request deletion of this correspondence, subject to applicable legal, security, or other legitimate retention requirements.

Visit records

The IP address in a visit record is deleted after 30 days. Visit records that aren’t linked to an account are deleted after 90 days. Campaign attribution linked to an account is kept while the account exists.

Technical logs

Technical and security logs are retained for operational and security purposes according to our infrastructure’s configured retention periods.

Backups

Deleted information may temporarily remain in system backups until those backups expire or are replaced under our backup retention schedule.

Backups are maintained for disaster recovery and are not ordinarily used to restore individual deleted accounts.

Other retention needs

In limited circumstances, we may retain information for longer when reasonably necessary to comply with legal obligations, investigate security incidents, resolve disputes, or protect the service.

7. Your choices and rights

You can manage many aspects of your information directly in Shirewell.

From Account settings, you can:

  • Update your name and account information.
  • Change notification preferences.
  • Manage your account security.
  • Delete your account.

You may also contact us to request:

  • A copy of personal information associated with your account.
  • Correction of inaccurate information.
  • Deletion of certain personal information.
  • Assistance with privacy questions or concerns.

This includes information about your home that was provided during onboarding and retained as part of your household profile, subject to the rights of other household members and applicable retention requirements.

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have additional privacy rights, including rights related to data portability or restrictions on certain processing.

We will review and respond to requests in accordance with applicable law.

Some requests may be subject to limitations, such as information that belongs to other household members or information we are legally required to retain.

We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.

To make a privacy request, visit Contact us and select Privacy & my data.

8. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information entrusted to Shirewell.

These include:

  • Storing passwords as one-way cryptographic hashes.
  • Using encrypted connections when information is transmitted between your browser and our service.
  • Using authentication cookies configured to prevent access by ordinary browser scripts.
  • Restricting administrative access to authorized personnel.
  • Providing a way to sign out of all active sessions.
  • Using technical safeguards intended to detect or prevent certain unauthorized activity.

No internet service can guarantee absolute security.

We encourage you to use a strong, unique password and notify us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised.

9. Children

Shirewell is not intended for children under 13 to create or operate their own accounts.

We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13.

If you believe a child under 13 has created an account or provided personal information directly to us, please contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.

Household members should avoid adding unnecessary sensitive information about children to shared tasks and comments.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Shirewell evolves.

When we make changes, we will update the Last updated date at the top of this page.

If a change materially affects how we collect, use, or share personal information, we will provide additional notice by email, through the application, or through another appropriate method before the change takes effect, when required.

The current version of this policy will remain available on our website.
